Thought I should throw in a blog post that wasn’t about the blog itself for once and while I am indeed a fan of some good old apple & cinnamon oatmeal, that’s not what I want to talk about today.
Today I just wanted to take a sec and promote a recent find via coworker Lauren. TheOatmeal.com is a fun little one man humor site full of comics both article like and random in their views and commentary as well as quizzes ranging from “Could You Pass a Driving Test?” to “How Long Could You Survive After Kicking a Bear in the Balls?”.
My personal foray into the twisted world of TheOatmeal started with “Why it’s better to pretend you don’t know anything about computers”, which Lauren thought I’d appreciate (I am the sole IT person for my company) and forwarded over. Appreciate it I did, so much that I could not help but give in to distraction and read on further into the site, which for the most part was equally full of win, a second short but sweet example being “8 Ways to Prepare Your Pets for War”(I have cats 😀 ).
So anyway, go and give it a look. I’ve finished all the comics and while its not pure gold, its pretty dang close. I now plan to follow up by taking the quizzes and posting the results to a soon to be made, “About Me” page, or something like that. Finally a place to save all the results from these kinds of things. Never had a good place before.
I must say it really is amazing the way the post ideas flow once you open yourself to talking about whatever you feel like. Of course this lack of focus will probably result in fewer watchers/subscribers, but so it goes.
So given my stated purpose I’m sure the domain/blog name seems pretty random and so some may be wondering whats going on there. The detailed explanation could be a bit involved so I’ll give you the cliff notes for now. Essentially I have a persistent original world scifi concept that I write stories for when I’m feeling creative, currently nothing posted anywhere so don’t bother looking, if I ever do decide to put anything about it in the public eye it will be here. I admit in its current form its pretty self indulgent so you probably won’t see much till I tone things down a bit so that there can be some conflict to make things interesting.
Nonetheless central to the world is an empire spanning a vast array of star systems. Technically it is the Jutari Empire and citizens identify themselves as being Jutari but otherwise because of its size and standing many, both inside as well as outside the empire, have taken to appending “Eternal” to the title when being formal and unless other empires are actively being discussed many will go so far as to simply refer to it as “The Empire”.
So the empire and such are very central to me creatively and that’s what is unique to me as a person, different from the endless other geeky blogs out there, so that’s what I decided to name the site/blog after. Anything else would have been in some way generic, calling on the same old themes. Its not SEO friendly I know, but you know what? I’ll live ;p
And happy holidays to those of differing beliefs.
Super touching video, wanted to embed but it keeps trying to auto-play. >Gift of Ages<
Semi-Random: I’m Methodist, that will probably come up at some point if I feel like rambling about philosophy or some such at some point, I don’t imagine I’ll draw attention to it specifically but that will be where I’m coming from just so you know going in. Honestly I just don’t care for the fighting, I choose to believe what I believe and others choose to believe what they do, as long as I’m not stepping on your to toes and you aren’t stepping on mine its all good. Of course some of the gray comes in people’s differing concept of what constitutes stepping on said toes.
In my philosophical ramblings, should they come to pass, by working from my personal world view I will inherently be seen in a way to be passing judgment on all that is counter too it, but to this situation I say two things. 1) My blog, my opinion, if it doesn’t jive with you sorry to hear that I wish you luck finding what you’re looking for in the blogosphere. 2) For my part I really do give this the weight of my OPINION, which is to say it is strong, I likely will not be wavered from it, and I think it is correct BUT I accept the possibility that it is ultimately wrong and so do not look down on those who do not share it simply because their opinion differs. If your opinion differs and you flame me or try to start a fight or something then I WILL probably look down on you for that.
I know this all may sound vaguely contradictory, we live in high strung and opinionated times where this kind of middle grounding can be rare, but it is honestly how I feel about it.
I hear you asking. In this age of seemingly endless exhibitionism what are MY reasons for creating a blog? Well I’m doing it for a few reasons.
I admit part of it is just the classic shouting out in the dark because its better than the silence. It feels good sometimes to express yourself, especially when you don’t often otherwise get the opportunity. Self centered as blogs and social media in general tend to be I happen to fully realize that not many people will care much about what I have to say because that’s how it tends to play out in real life. In spite of my best efforts, real life events have resulted in a general perception that what I have to say just isn’t that interesting to most people, which has led to some social difficulties. Its hard to get and particularly KEEP a conversation going when you are convinced before hand that the other person won’t be interested in your side of the conversation. With a blog, however, I’m shouting out to everyone, casting the net wide as they say. So with luck maybe I’ll find a few oddballs actually interested and if not, again it still feels good to express yourself. Outside of this quest to simply be heard?
